On Weather…

Skiing every day is as tough as riding the bike every day. I get bored with it. The weather changes, the snow conditions change and every time you take a run down through the trees, it’s a little bit different, but I still don’t want to spend all day every day skiing. So the social side becomes very important. Lately we’ve been skiing with a Canadian from Ontario who comes out here every season. He is a delight to ski with, knowing where the conditions are likely to be better, and even the best ways to tackle some of the runs. More importantly, he appreciates the importance of regular breaks. That gives you the opportunity to warm up and chat and restock your energy levels.

But there are some days when it’s just a pleasure to be up the mountain. The snow sparkles – sometimes even the air sparkles, and everything looks clean and new washed. These are the days when the sun shines after days of cloud or snow. New snow is good too, and far more tiring than it should be, because you don’t want to stop while there’s still fresh powder to be had.

We’ve been playing in the trees around Paradise, and now have graduated onto Beer Belly among other. Great names for the runs here – they’re all named on the piste map. On the ground – not so much. Sometimes it would be nice to know what it was we just skied, other than the trees to the left of x, y or z run.

Today, rain was forecast and duly arrived, at least at the base of the mountain. We didn’t go up at all – it being a busy Saturday, we thought the weather dictated we should give it a miss. So we’ve been virtuous and done things like washing, changing sheets, cleaning and food shopping.

The snow and cooler conditions will come back soon enough.
